Bonjour.
I’m Dominic. I’m originally from the UK, and I recently relocated with my family from Berlin to Montreal. I was based in Berlin for eight years, and before that I lived in Hanoi, Vietnam (also for eight years). I spent two years in China before Hanoi, and before that lived in both Australia and New Zealand.
I love (or am obsessed with) music, literature, and art, and am happiest when at a gig, reading, at a gallery, or in nature.
My family and kids are everything to me.
I’m not that keen on talking about myself, to be honest, so…here are a few pictures…
…well then…
Before working as a photographer, as I travelled widely, I had maybe a hundred different kinds of job (I’ll count them one day). I taught English, drumming, picked most kinds of fruit and veg, campaigned for charities (once dressed as a koala), herded cows, sold paintings, and ran a carnival stand.
In Vietnam, I decided I needed some direction. I was teaching at the time and had had enough of the predictability of going to an office each day. I’d always loved photography, had always been taking photographs, and felt like it was time to take a risk and work with one of my passions.
I was lucky enough to be friends with several photographers in the region, and after picking their brains I took the plunge.
Since then, every day has been different, and each day has presented a new challenge. I’ve photographed for international newspapers and magazines, shot personal projects, portraits, and corporate events. I’ve shot for UNICEF in the Mekong Delta, shot the Berlin Marathon, and travelled to Bangladesh to cover water issues.
Regardless of the place or the subject, 99% of my photography work has always involved using images to tell stories, and so the possibility of telling one of life’s most important stories is what drew me to also shoot weddings early on.
For me, the editorial, documentary, event and portrait work I do outside shooting weddings and engagements compliments them, and vice versa. Photographs, I believe, wherever and whenever they’re taken, are a combination of narrative and emotion, and the expression of these through art. Which is why I continue to shoot multiple forms and don’t specialise as a ‘pure’ wedding photographer. I enjoy shooting a variety of subjects, it keeps me fresh and on my toes.
If you’d like to take a deeper look (than the four images below) at my non-wedding photography, head on over to my Editorial Portfolio.
Photography is a way to document life, to capture its narratives creatively, and to witness and be part of its celebrations – and there’s no better place for this than at a wedding.
It’s been an absolute privilege for me to meet and photograph couples from around the world, for them to entrust me with documenting their special day, and to provide them with photographs that they will want to go back to again and again.
After having photographed weddings in many beautiful locations around the world, I’m looking forward to meeting you and photographing yours, wherever it may be.
That comes from the last line of the traditional wedding rhyme below. In ye olden days, pennies (or pence), weren’t denoted by a ‘p’ as they are today, but by a ‘d’. So a sixpence would be ‘6d’.
